A short definition of Storytelling for entrepreneurs

Storytelling and marketing

The first thing that you’ll probably want to know is that Storytelling is not something new. It has been around for about as much as there has been stories to tell and traditional marketing has been using it for the better part of a century or more.

The relevance that it has acquired over the past decade could come from a number of factors:

  • The introduction of social media into the advertising landscape.
  • The overflow of content into the everyday life and the internet.
  • The globalization of economy.

Among other factors. If you combined all of them, it may be possible to arrive at a conclusion: there is too much information, too many products, too many things to read and watch and talk about.

For that, it has gotten more important, especially for the emergent entrepreneurs, to distinguish themselves and the product or service they offer from the thousand others that a consumer can find online.

What do you mean by Storytelling?

Write with Storytelling

There are many possible roads we can take to give you a proper definition of Storytelling. Yes, it comes from the ancient art of telling stories that people can relate to, that allows them to return someplace familiar for them, to form a bond.

You might be starting to notice why it has become more relevant now in marketing. If you can get your clients to create bonds, emotional, strong, ties with your company then you’ll have more presence into their lives.

A brand, for example, could become something more for your clients. A successful marketing strategy with effective Storytelling will turn your product into a meaningful part of your client’s life.

3 easy ways to effectively use Storytelling

Learning how to apply Storytelling in your marketing strategies won’t be easy. It’ll take some time for your right clients to find you and, even when they do, you need to be sending a message in accordance with their needs and more.

People often don’t react well to a message that it’s just telling them to buy, to become a customer, you need to go deeper. But how? We give some tips:

  1. You need to know the people you are trying to reach. In order to be a part of their lives you need to know every detail about it, or at least, as much as you can.
  2. Select your audience. Ask yourself: who is gonna read, watch or hear my message? Do research and interact with them. Don’t think about them just as customers.
  3. Even if you are a local entrepreneur it is important that you have a platform. A way for your ideal client to find you. If you are not big on the social media, then form connections with the people around you, strategic alliances with the local radio or other entrepreneurs.

Engaging with the people is the first step into Storytelling. After that, you’ll have an easier time creating content for them, products that they just don’t need but feel that it would represent them.

Give your brand a name, a face even, something that it can be recognizable. There has been a lot of criticism around the exaggerated importance that our modern society gives to individuality; everybody seems to want to be different, unique. This is an opportunity in the marketing world, more than a social liability.

It is important to remember that the internet is too big, there is too much out there, don’t try to reach everyone. This is something that can be hard to internalized, but if you create content or build a marketing campaign for everyone, chances are that you ideal customer will not be able to find you.

We hope that some of this tips can be useful to you. In the upcoming days we’ll continue to talk about Storytelling and give you some examples on this matter.
